When I was a little girl, home theater decor was a TV in the living room. One of those round screened ones that you sometimes see in mid-century antique shows. Toward the end of the 20th century, home theater decor began to take on a new look, with giant speakers doubling as plant stands in the four corners of a room and a rack of expensive components. TV's got bigger, and prices got smaller, and by the end of the 1990's, home theaters were fairly commonplace.

In the 21st century, home theaters have moved from the family room into a separate media room, and home theater decor has come into its own. There are interior designers who specialize in home theater decor, and new products have been developed specifically for family media rooms.

The basics of home theater decor

Form follows function, and in home theater decor, function is the first thing to deal with. You have to put that video receiver-whether it's a TV or a projection screen-somewhere. You have to decide where the speakers will be and how you want the other components placed, what kind of seating you want and where to place it. You'll need somewhere for people to put their drinks and snacks. And you'll have to look at lighting, flooring, acoustics and basic interior design.

Fun and funky home theater decor

If you're lucky enough to have a home media room, you can have a lot of fun decorating it. Many home theater decor products are designed to make the home theater experience fun. You can decorate with theater posters and put up a marquee. Theater-style popcorn poppers, concession cases and pop machines are available. Specially designed chairs are available for home theater decor that is even better than those in the theater. Most have cup holders, and some have motorized recliners and snack storage. You can even buy chairs with Buttkickers, which send the sound directly to the listener's body. You get better sound at lower volumes, and you can feel the audio vibrations as well as hear them. Home theater decor can be just about as fun as you want it to be.

Elegant home theater decor

At the other end of the spectrum, home theater decor can be very elegant. Instead of Buttkicker chairs, you can find beautiful love seats, sectionals and couches as comfortable as theater seats. Art deco accessories work well in home theater decor, and the rooms are often painted in the rich tones of the old art deco theaters. The home theater components are hidden in specially constructed cabinets, and speakers can be placed in the cabinets or hidden in the ceiling or wall. Flat screen TV's may be lowered into a cabinet or mounted on the wall and covered with a decorative panel when not in use.

Your media room can be as fun and funky, or as elegant and formal, as you want it to be. In the 21st century, there are many choices in home theater decor. Elegant or funky, you can find whatever suits your style as you design your family's media room.
